What is Elmiron?
Elmiron (pentosan) is a bladder medication prescribed for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC) and other bladder conditions. Interstitial cystitis is known for causing painful and urgent trips to the bathroom and affects as many as 12 million Americans. Chronic IC is associated with a hard bladder and low bladder storage.
Studies suggest that Elmiron helps to repair thin bladder walls and reduces the symptoms of interstitial cystitis about 38 percent of the time. Some patients see improvement in a few days, while others are on the medication for upwards of six or nine months before getting any relief.
What Are the Risks of Taking Elmiron?
However, taking Elmiron for extended periods of time is now associated with serious eye damage, including:

Research Links Elmiron to Maculopathy and Other Eye Injuries
In 2018, research conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology discovered a link between maculopathy and Elmiron use. Six patients experiencing macular irregularities had been taking Elmiron for at least 15 years. All six exhibited similar eye and vision problems.
After this initial study, three ophthalmologists reviewed 4.3 million records of patients at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California in 2019. The researchers identified 140 patients who had taken at least 5,000 Elmiron pills each year over the course of 15 years. Two-thirds of the patients agreed to an exam. 22 percent of these patients demonstrated obvious signs of drug toxicity – which appeared to worsen the longer the patients were on Elmiron.
On the heels of these discoveries, Elmiron users have begun to file lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturer, Jannsen Pharmaceuticals.
